Getting Off the Identity Survival Carousel: What I Discovered After Everything Was Lost

Two months.
That was all it took for everything I had created to collapse.
I lost the business I had dedicated my life to, the savings I had built over years, and the relationship I believed would last—in just eight weeks. Gone.
But the most painful part wasn’t what I lost.
It was why I lost it.
It took months to realise I wasn't living from a place of wholeness or alignment. I was surviving.
But what does that even mean?
To live from wholeness means you’re no longer trying to fill a void with achievement, relationships, or validation. You’re not hustling to prove you’re enough—you already believe you are.
To live in alignment means your thoughts, actions, and goals reflect your deeper values. You're not pretending, performing, or compromising just to feel safe or accepted. You’re being who you truly are—even when it’s uncomfortable or slow.
Living from wholeness and alignment feels like:
- Saying yes when you mean yes, and no when you mean no
- Letting go of roles that keep you in survival (the fixer, the achiever, the tough one)
- Making choices not from fear—but from clarity and inner truth
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about being honest with yourself.
And for most of us, that kind of living feels unfamiliar at first—because we’ve spent a lifetime earning our worth.
But alignment isn’t something you earn.
It’s something you remember.
Performance, proving my value, and overcoming failure were the cornerstones of my identity. I know I’m not alone—but I had no idea I was trapped in what I now call the Identity Survival Carousel.

The Identity Survival Carousel: What Is It?
The Identity Survival Carousel is the unconscious cycle we get trapped in when our sense of self is tied to:
- What we do rather than who we are
- Achieving to earn love
- People-pleasing to avoid abandonment or shame
- Hyper-independence because trusting others feels unsafe
On the surface, it looks like success—ambition, hustle, control.
But underneath? Fear is running the show.
And fear is a terrible planner for a fulfilling life.
I didn’t realise it then, but I had built my entire life from a version of me still trying to survive my earliest wounds.
My Tipping Point
When the breakup happened, it felt like a part of my identity shattered.
The business collapse followed, and with it, my financial stability.
Each loss revealed another layer of false certainty—another piece of armour I didn’t even know I was wearing.
I began to see clearly:
I had built everything from fear.
- Fear of not being enough
- Fear of being left behind
- Fear of slowing down
The truth?
I wasn’t chasing a dream—I was chasing safety in disguise.
The Neuroscience of Survival & Identity
When you live in survival mode, your nervous system is constantly on alert.
Your amygdala—the brain’s fear centre—becomes overactive.
It hijacks your prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for long-term planning and self-awareness.
This isn’t just psychological. It’s neurological.
Our identities form around safety patterns.
If you learned love is conditional, you might grow up into someone who overachieves, overfunctions, or over-controls—just to feel worthy.
It may look like drive, but it’s really self-protection.

Rewriting the Story
Real transformation begins when you stop performing your identity—and start rewriting it.
At Renova, we help you do exactly that. Here’s how to start:
1. Identify the Pattern
Ask yourself: Who did I have to be to feel safe, loved, or accepted growing up?
That’s your survival identity.
2. Feel What You’ve Been Avoiding
You can’t just think your way out of this.
You have to feel it. Grieve the parts of you that had to hustle for love.
3. Choose a New Story
This isn’t about pretending.
It’s about deciding to live as someone who already knows they are worthy and safe—no external validation required.
The Turning Point
The collapse marked the beginning of something deeper.
Renova was born—not as a product, but as a promise.
To myself: that I would never again abandon who I truly am just to feel safe or successful.
And that I would build something to help others do the same.
